Book Submission Guidelines
Thank you for your inquiry concerning our requirements. We hope the following information will answer most of your questions. If not, please email us at: Submissions@StoryInstitute.com
We publish creative works of fiction that reaches into the imagination. We do want short story collections, but not a short story (for a single short story, please check out our short story contest); We do want poetry collections, but not a poem (for a single poem, please check out our poetry contest). The average length of the novels we will publish varies. To estimate the length of your manuscript, you may want to use the method mentioned below.
Please do not submit handwritten material. Manuscripts must be electronically submitted. Mailed, faxed, or photocopied works are not under consideration at this time. The manuscript should be formatted for letter-sized, 8″ x 11″ paper, double-spaced, with at least 1″ wide margins all around. Please put the title of your novel at the top of each page.
Important Note: Please enter your name, address and phone number in the upper right hand corner of the first page of your manuscript. Right under this, please put the length of your manuscript in approximate number of words.
We publish first novels if they are of professional quality. A literary agent is not required for submission. We will consider manuscripts that are currently on submission to another publisher.
It may require up to three months or more for our editors to review a submission and come to a decision. We will contact you first by email, second by phone if we have chosen your manuscript for publication. Distribution and royalties are discussed on a per book basis. If you do not receive a confirmation email within three business days, please contact us to ensure delivery of your manuscript.
It is not necessary for you to register or copyright your work before publication—it is protected by law as long as it has not been published. When published, we will copyright the book in the author’s name and register that copyright with the Library of Congress.
HOW TO GET THE WORD COUNT OF A MANUSCRIPT
1. Count the words in 10 lines and divide the total number of words by 10.
2. Count the lines on an average page.
3. Multiply the total number of lines for the sample full page by the approximate word count for one line. This gives you the word count for one page.
4. Then multiply this total count for the words on one page by the total number of pages in your manuscript. This is the total length of your manuscript in words. Please put this number on page one of your manuscript, right under your name address.
5. To check the accuracy of your count, please repeat this process twice.
6. Please email manuscripts to John E. Murray, III, CEO, Story Institute, LLC.
