Poetry Topics – Leaves a Fallin’
Leaves, brightly colored or various shades of green cling to the branches as long as possible. Needles point outward and upward absorbing the warmth of the afternoon sun. Whether you jump in the large piles left on the verdant terrain, or you anticipate the blanket of deep hues of green along with fresh blossoms, you have a verse for leaves.
Think about the days you drove right by a newly planted tree. Think about the old oak that has stood for decades within your community. Think about the trimming you did over the weekend. Describe the leaves. Describe the trees. Describe your connection to each. Post it here, or share elsewhere, but write and enjoy…

The Shape of a Tree
Your branches reflect
in the morning light
onto my shiny table
through the window
upside down, bright
stark geometry
of January
You have lost
the weight of summer leaves
You are so skinny,
I can see your bones—
sharp, white,
outlined by blue sky
You’ll be fat again
in June
full and curvy
and you’ll give me shade
You’re beautiful to me
either way
